For the second year in a row, The Positive Community served as an official media partner of Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District’s (LPCCD) Jazzy Soul Series powered by Tito’s Handmade Vodka. This year’s Lincoln Park Jazzy Soul Series, in collaboration with WBGO 88.3FM, welcomed the Antoinette Montague Experience at Swahili Village in July and then closed out with Camden NJ’s Nasir Dickerson live at the new Tinjune Downtown in September.
“The Lincoln Park Jazzy Soul Series not only celebrates the jazz art form, it introduces jazz to the next generation infusing poetry, R&B, soul, funk, Brazilian samba and more,” states Kim J. Ford of BRND Marketing Group LLC—the official agency for LPCCD and the series creator.
Partner organization Clinton Hill Community Action non-profit arts & culture initiative led by Margie “Mia X” Johnson kicked off the night with poetry accompanied by violinist J-Read. The September event was made extra special taking place during Newark’s Restaurant Week and the citywide Newark Arts Festival. Newark Arts Festival’s “Cross Cultural Perspectives” theme was evident as guests dined on soulful Asian fare at Newark’s latest hot spot while multi-instrumentalist Nasir Dickerson played the sax, flute, and African kora (a West African harp).
“Amiri Baraka, one of our founding board members, was a jazz historian and stalwart. He hosted Jazz on our main Lincoln Park Music Festival stage for many years” said LPCCD Executive Director Anthony Smith. “The Lincoln Park Jazzy Soul Series continues his legacy but is also an economic driver in Newark’s eateries and lounges, driving foot traffic on weeknights in the Mayor’s new Arts and Education District.”
What we know for sure, the Lincoln Park Jazzy Soul Series is a fun, safe, intergenerational good time. Oh what a night!
